Back in 2015, it was confirmed that The X-Files would be making a mini return in 2016, and it was thought that was the end of it. However it was later confirmed that we would be getting a longer Season 11 in 2018, which has actually started airing. Now if you’re thinking that we can expect more seasons following this, you might be disappointed.

This is because actress Gillian Anderson, who plays Scully in the series, has confirmed that she is officially done with the series and will be walking away for good. This was revealed during the Television Critics Association winter press tour in which Anderson stated that she was actually done in Season 10, but the pitch for Season 11 made her change her mind.

Speaking to reports, Anderson was quoted as saying, “Before we did this ten, I did think that that was going to be it. But the minute they mentioned that they might be interested in doing another, I thought, ‘You know what? That didn’t feel like the right way to end it.’ It didn’t feel like I would necessarily have been happy if those six were how we said goodbye and thought the way that the writers were talking about doing another season, were we to do another season, sounded more like a good ending to me.”

As for her co-star David Duchovny who plays Mulder, it isn’t necessarily the end for him. Duchovny admitted that he has tried many times to quit playing Mulder, but he just can’t seem to say goodbye. “I’m good either way. I’m good with this being the end, I’m good with it not being the end. I can’t see the future. I don’t know. Whatever comes across my desk, I take a look at if it’s written.”

While the series could technically continue without Anderson or Duchovny, it will probably not be the same.
